November 11th Youth Festival of Remembrance

Description: The Youth Festival of Remembrance will return for its 8th Consecutive year on Saturday 11th November 2016 at the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone. Once again the Festival is being sponsored and supported by Shepway District Council, Folkestone Town Council and The Roger De Hann Charitable Trust.
Last year’s performers include Local Sea, Royal Marines, Army and Air Cadets along with Local Secondary and Primary Schools, Dance Warehouse, Shepway Brass Academy and the incredible Blue Falcons Gymnastic Display Team, plus a few new additional elements throughout the evening all ending in a muster with standards and a short dedication service followed by a 2 minute silence with a poppy drop to finish.
Don’t miss out on this truly unique and outstanding show and one not to be missed!! All money goes to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal 2014.
To date the festival has raised over £19,000 for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Description: Forget Ascot, the most important race on the riding calendar was held in Folkestone on Saturday.
The Donkey Derby run by Folkestone Lions Club returned IN 2016 much to the delight of the hundreds of visitors who turned up to the event at Radnor Park.
Alongside the main attractions were charity stalls, entertainment and refreshments as well as the popular boot fair.
The Lions Club is always looking for volunteers and new members so if you would like to get involved contact the club via their website.

Description: The Strongest Man UK U105kg is organized on behalf of Folkestone Festivals by Marc Cherry of Hyperoptic, who was at the Hawkinge Festival in 2016. Twelve of the UK’s strongest men will qualify for this great final.!
This year it will take place in the area from the bandstand towards the Leas which is ideal for this particularly the hard surface between the grass with viewing either side.
Details of the event:
Martin VOS will be hosting on the day. Head Referee for the day is Sean Kennedy 3 times UK Champion 2012-2014-2015 so happy to have Sean on board again top referee top bloke…! Rebel Strength will be supplying the kit and will be there on the day…! Straps, belts and suits on deadlift..! Briefs, wraps and belts on squats..!

The other side of the bandstand we will have an inflatable 50ft tunnel run with obstacles, Gladiator Joust, lnflatable football out game and plan for pedal Go Karting.
There will be additional toilets, (thanks to sponsorship from a local business), as well as catering stalls (fish/burger type) and ice cream van. There will be no alcohol sold – these can be obtained from the nearby hotels, bars etc if people need them. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own chairs and picnics.

Basepoint Primary Schools Concert

Description: A beautiful, sunny day in Folkestone greeted the Primary Schools Concert event in 2016, sponsored by Basepoint, organised by Hilary Walker of All Souls CE Primary School in Cheriton and enjoyed by many in a relaxing venue.
After all costs £385 was raised for Great Ormond Street Hospital on the day – a great result. In 2017 the schools would like to support Demelza House.
A brilliant day with food stall, ice cream, Peppa Pig and Fireman Sam and story-telling and Face Painting with a Pirates Theme throughout the day. Hilary Walker was thanked for laying on such an entertaining afternoon and Basepoint and Children’s Party Mascots were thanked for their sponsorship. Basepoint are happy to sponsor the 2017 event again and it is planned to raise money for Demelza House.
Schools and groups who participated included Shepway Brass Academy who played a selection of pieces including Mission Impossible and Pirates of the Caribbean. This was followed by the Folkestone Academy Junior Choir singing Diamonds Medley and a solo performer from Brockhill Park Performing Arts College.
St. Martins Primary Choir sang Beauty and the Beast and When She Loved Me followed by a solo performer from Folkestone Academy singing Empty Chairs from Les Miserables and a solo performer from Ark Drama 2000 with the beautiful song I Dreamed a Dream Other performances came from Glassworks Sixth Form Rock Band (500 miles), Josh Sprague the beatboxer and Matt Walker of Harvey Grammar singing Mr Cellophane.
The afternoons music and dance festival continued with Christ Church, CEP Academy with a selection of songs including Thank you for the music, Ark Drama 2000 – Pure Imagination, Summer Nights, Wild Wild World and Bollywood Dance and a solo performer singing Somewhere Only we Know.
This was followed by a Collaboration of Folkestone School for Girls/ Glassworks sixth form (All that Jazz) with Katie and Chris Walker. The finale included a Gospel Medley, Scary Fairground Ride, Power in Me by All Souls Primary Performing Arts Club, a Collaboration of All Souls /Ark Drama 2000 with a Madness Medley and then all schools and Ark Drama 2000 sang together Invincible (with Kate Walker as the Soloist).

Sandcastle competition

Description: Each summer hundreds descend on Folkestone between 10am and 1pm, depending on the tides, for the annual sandcastle competition, armed only with a bucket, spade and plenty of imagination. Entry is £10. Head to Sunny Sands, Folkestone, CT19 6PX
From turtles to mermaids, cars to sea creatures, folk of all ages come up with some stunning creations using just one ingredient – sand.
Whether you’re an amateur or professional, a first timer or a veteran, you can go along to compete.
The annual contest will raise funds for the Church Street Project in Shepway.
